Sinkiang. Wang Shu Tan gold "Ration" Mace (Miscal) ND (1907) MS63 NGC, Tihwa mint, L&M-1051, Kann-1508, KM-Y8. A rare gold issue, produced for a few short months in 1907 by military governor Wang Shu Tan to pay local expenditures and military personnel. As a result, the issuance, clearly intended to relieve a short-term shortage of specie, likely gained little commercial acceptance, with a high percentage of the original mintage eventually succumbing to melting with the intention of repurposing the gold. Today, a few lucky examples survive, likely having been put aside by their more fortunate recipients, only to be forgotten for later generations to discover. The present coin, with its deep golden tone, is certainly suggestive of such as scenario, as the surfaces remain close to untouched, with full sparkling luster over both sides. The strike and engraving are also quite remarkable for an issue of intended short-term usage, as the dragon and surrounding design are well-formed, with the beading on both sides being rather finely imparted. Undoubtedly one of the finest examples of this type to survive and for the impassioned collector of rare Chinese gold, a coin that should certainly reach a level of rarely rivaled desirability.Ex.
