China
Republic Tsao Kun gold Specimen Dollar ND (1923) SP61 PCGS, KM-Pn67, K-1572, L&M-1126. A scarce presentation striking featuring the bust of Tsao Kun in civilian attire. Light handling throughout the fields is present and accounts for the grade, while a small coppery-tinged alloy spot is noted on the reverse. This piece is one of only six examples of this type that have been certified in Mint State by NGC or PCGS. Ever-popular, this offering presents an ideal opportunity for an enthusiast of Republic of China issues.Tsao Kun is notorious for having bribed members of the Beiyang Government Assembly with 5,000 Dollars each in his bid for the presidency, which he held from October 1923 to October 1924. One wonders whether any of these presentation pieces may have been intended as part of the bribes paid.
Estimate: 18000-24000 USD
