Travancore. Rama Varma VI gold 2 Pagodas ND (1870-1931) MS66 NGC, KM-X12, Fr-1414. This piece displays voluminous fields that bloom with mint luster and a crisply-defined conch shell illustration which sits fully-elevated atop the pristine expanses. The central reverse inscription features a touch of weakness which is often encountered on this singular issue, but the surrounding sprays are meticulously sharp. Once in hand, the eye immediately lands in the open expanses which are pleasingly-fresh for both the grade and the type, and as the eye extends outward, it is met with high rims that halo the outer registers. Unsurprisingly, this is the only certified example of the type. An absolute jewel, rare in all regards, and with a trusted pedigree lineage that only adds to its value. There is some dispute about the date of this issue, with both KM, and Friedberg, listing it at 1870-1931, while NGC has listed it on the holder as 1860-80. Ex. Mortimer Hammel Collection
