Indonesia Republik Indonesia Serikat 5 Rupiah ND (1949) Pick UNL Face and Back Approval Specimens. Republik Indonesia Serikat (RIS) was Indonesian for the Republic of the United States of Indonesia. This was the federal state to which the Netherlands formally transferred sovereignty of much of the Dutch East Indies on December 27, 1949. This transfer of power ended the four-year conflict between Indonesian nationalists and the Netherlands. The RIS lasted less than a year before being replaced by the Republic of Indonesia. The Security Banknote Company Specimens in this and the following lots are numismatic reminders of the RIS. The face grades PCGS Superb Gem New 69PPQ, hole punch cancelled. The back grades PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ. Both have a printed date of "12-21-49" in the margin at upper right. "Approved for Production:" followed by a long signature line is printed on the back of each. Both pieces in this lot have not been signed. From The Lim & Lim Collection
