China Deutsch-Asiatische Bank Shanghai $200 1.7.1914 Pick S288r Remainder. The Deutsch-Asiatische Bank was one of the preeminent foreign banks in China during the early part of the 20th century. Opening its first branch in Shanghai in 1889, it saw immediate success, mainly by financing various infrastructure projects within China, and expanded its operations to open branches in numerous other cities, as well as other countries in East Asia. In 1907, each branch began printing banknotes which circulated throughout their respective domains. This remainder note offered here did not see such circulation as its grade attests, and it is both a mystery and a small miracle of sorts that it survived up to today. It hails from the original Shanghai branch, which was the only branch that issued denominations of 200 Dollars which is the highest available for this issuer. In providing a proper estimate, there is no comparison piece off of which to base such an estimate. In June 2016 we sold two 5 Dollar examples from the Peking branch which each realized $10,157 and which both had restorations performed on them. The sky is the limit for this 200 Dollar example with no adverse comments from PMG. It is surely destined for the finest of Chinese banknote collections. PMG Choice Uncirculated 64.
