Duress Note Hong Kong Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation $500 1.1.1936 Pick UNL. A "duress note" that was forcibly pen signed by the chief accountant under duress by the occupying Japanese forces during World War II. Next, the notes were subjected to the forced exchange into Japanese military yen. Many of the HK "duress notes" were then used to buy war supplies in neutral Macau. This is the first $500 "duress" note that we have offered. The Krause reference lists $500 "duress notes" for the 1927-30 issue, but not the 1935-37 series. However, the serial number of this 1.1.1936 note in this lot is C186,083 which falls within the C126,000 through C300,000 range listed in Krause for the $500 1927-30 Pick 177c "duress notes." This example grades PMG Very Fine 30, minor edge damage and an ink stamp. The ink stamp is partially in English and reads, "Dack Back Canton."
