Private John Jones was dangerously wounded in action, receiving a gun-shot wound to the left thigh, during the Gordons' famous assault and capture of the hilltop stronghold known as the 'Dargai Heights' on 20 October 1897, where Piper George Findlater and Private Edward Lawson won the Victoria Cross.
