Military Medal, G.V.R. (3187 B. S. Mjr W. G. Sandys. R.G.A.), well-toned, small obverse edge nick, otherwise good very fine or better. M.M.: London Gazette, 20 August 1919. Battery Sergeant Major William George Sandys, M.M., M.S.M., of Portsmouth, Hampshire, was born c. February 1883, and served as a regular soldier, enlisting in February 1899. From 1914 to 1916 he was engaged on what the National Roll of the Great War describes as 'important home duties' which seem to have been as part of the batteries defending Portsmouth naval base. In 1916 he was sent to the Western Front and fought on the Somme and at Arras and Cambrai, being awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous bravery in the field and the Meritorious Service Medal (London Gazette: 18 January 1919. After the War, he returned to Portsmouth and joined 154th Siege Battery. Offered with a copy of his Medal Index Card and of his entry in the National Roll of the Great War, showing entitlement to additional Great War Pair and Meritorious Service Medal.
