Jean II's reign was frought with turmoil. The beginning of the Hundred Years War and the great plague got the new dynasty off to a bad start. Unable to levy taxes, it resorted to monetary transfers to replenish the treasury. These manipulations caused extremely unpopular devaluation of the currency.
