FRANCE: Napoleon I, Emperor, 1804-1815, uniface medal set, set of 10 coppered lead and bronzed lead uniface cliché medals by Bertrand Andrieu illustrating the Revolution and the reign of Napoleon including: 86mm 1789 Prise de la Bastille et Arrivée du roi à Paris (Bastille Day and Arrival of King in Paris) both obverse and reverse; An 8 (1799) Passage du Saint-Bernard (Napoleon Crossing the Alps) and An 8 (1799) Victoire de Marengo (Victory of Marengo); 68mm both reverse dies, one obverse die of Napoleon as Emperor and King and another as just Emperor; another of Empress Marie Louise and another of Empress Josephine, all 68mm; plus two large modules of a laureated Napoleon, both 140mm, all set in the original case of issue which shows usual wear, medals all EF, retail value $2000, set of 10 medals, RRR. Bertrand Andrieu (1761-1822) was a French engraver of medals. He was born in Bordeaux. In France, he was considered the restorer of the art, which had declined after the time of Louis XIV. During the last twenty years of his life, the French government commissioned him to undertake every major work of importance. This set was produced ca.1815 with two custom fitted trays in a 27cm x 35cm wooden box constructed like a gilt-edged book. One of the trays contains eight medals, the other two large medals. The spine is decorated with eagles and is inscribed in English: NAPOLEON MEDALS. This set of medals, encased in a false book, was made for the British market after the fall of Napoleon.
