The Siege of Middelburg lasted two years and occurred between 1572 and 1574 during the Eighty Years War. With the help of England, a Dutch rebel army brought a siege upon Middelburg, which was being held by the forces of Spanish commander Cristóbal de Mondragón. In 1574, Mondragón became aware of recent massacres of Spanish peasants; reaching agreement with William of Orange that the inhabitants would not be harmed, he signed the transfer of authority.
