MIDDELBURG: AR 2 daalder (29.13g), 157Z, Mailliet-1, Delmonte-165, 34 x 34mm siege klippe from the siege by the "Sea Beggars" on Middelburg, uniface, + / .D. R.P. / F.MIDD'/ .1.5.7.Z in central circle with left countermark of the arms of Zeeland and the right countermark being the city arms, boldly struck, early die state, VF-EF, R. The Siege of Middelburg lasted two years and occurred between 1572 and 1574 during the Eighty Years War. With the help of England, a Dutch rebel army brought a siege upon Middelburg, which was being held by the forces of Spanish commander Cristóbal de Mondragón. In 1574, Mondragón became aware of recent massacres of Spanish peasants; reaching agreement with William of Orange that the inhabitants would not be harmed, he signed the transfer of authority.
