MACEDON. Kingdom of Macedon. Alexander III (the Great), 336-323 B.C. AV Stater (8.37 gms), Uncertain Eastern Mint, ca. 325-300 B.C. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Scratches.
cf.Pr-3991. Lifetime or early posthumous issue. Head of Athena facing right, wearing crested Corinthian helmet adorned with serpent; Reverse: Nike standing left holding wreath and stylus. No symbol or mintmark present, leading to the Price attribution above, though the style (especially for the obverse die) seems somewhat different. A few light scratches on the obverse behind Athena's head. A fascinating issue worthy of further study. NGC Ch EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Scratches.
