Von Fritze-220. Two eagles standing facing each other on filleted omphalos, tunny fish below; Reverse: Quadripartite incuse square. Minor scuffs on omphalos and above the eagles. Well struck. The iconography used here relates to the founding of Delphi. According to myth, Zeus released two eagles, one each at the furthest point east and west and set them flying towards one another. Where the eagles met was determined to be the center. The spot became Delphi and was marked by an ornamental omphalos. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 3/5. Scuffs.
