JUDAEA. First Jewish War, A.D. 66-70. AE Half Shekel (18.30 gms), Year 4 (A.D. 69-70).
Hendin-668. "To the Redemption of Zion" (in Hebrew), Seven-branched palm tree with two bunches of dates, flanked by baskets of fruit; Reverse: "Year Four - Half" (in Hebrew) Etrog (citron) flanked by a lulav at left and right. Lovely oxblood surfaces with a deep olive green patina. The fourth year of the First Jewish War brought an increasingly difficult situation to the embattled Jews, as a civil war broke out between different Jewish factions. This compounded the desperation they had with fighting the Romans. From this dire time came the world's first siege money, a fiduciary fractional of the shekel. NGC Ch VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5.
