NERVA, A.D. 96-98. AE Sestertius (20.98 gms), Rome Mint, ca. A.D. 96. BOLD VERY FINE.
RIC-58. "IMP NERVA CAES AVG P M TR P COS II P P" Laureate head of Nerva facing right; Reverse: "FISCI IVDAICI CALVMNIA SVBLATA" Palm tree, "S - C" at either side. At approximately four o'clock on the obverse there is an attempted repair to a flan split. The majority of the coin displays a pleasing dark patina with hints of hunter green, a wholesome example. The reverse legend refers to Nerva's rescinding of the abuses associated with the poll tax known as the fiscus Iudaicus, which had been levied on adult male Jews following Rome's subjugation of the rebels at the end of the Jewish War (A.D. 71). Domitian vigorously enforced collection of the tax, which had been extended to all Jews within the domain of the Empire, regardless of age, whereupon many attempted to hide their identity to avoid paying it. Nerva relaxed these collection abuses and applied the tax to only those Jews who continued to openly avow their faith. BOLD VERY FINE.
