PANAMA. 150 Balboa Struck in Gold, 1947. NGC MS-64.
Fr-unlisted; KM-unlisted; The only known example and very possibly UNIQUE gold off metal strike 150 Balboas which is dated 1947 but likely struck in the 1970's with modified dies. Indeed with careful examination portions of the original die can be detected at the beginning and end of the denomination on the obverse and the weight and engraver's signature behind Liberty on the reverse. Other changes include a slight change to the ribbon on the leftmost side of the shield on the reverse. Most interestingly, there are three small privy marks just behind Balboa's bust, one of which likely indicate the purity of the gold. Mild die rust is present as expected after the dies remained inert for nearly a quarter century. Also included in this lot is a circulation strike 1947 1 Balboa (NGC MS-64) for comparison purposes. This incredible piece has garnered a stratospheric MS-67 grade from NGC, and given its potentially unique status we expect this piece to cause a veritable bidding war once it reaches the auction podium. NGC MS-67.

From the Richard Stuart Collection.

Estimate: $20000.00- $30000.00
