PERU. Silver Indian Peace Medal, ND. Lima Mint. Charles III (1759-88). PCGS Genuine--Scratch, Unc Details.
Approximately 42 mm. Medina-MCN-3 (this piece). Laureate head of Charles III left with hair ribbon at back, legend around with floral corded band around rim; Reverse: Scene of Andes Army General Jose de San Martin seated in horse drawn carriage with Victory behind placing laurel wreath on his head. A UNIQUE mule striking utilizing the obverse of the EXTREMELY RARE 1783 silver award medal given to loyal Indians who fought for the Spanish during the revolt of Tupac Amaru (2 examples known) and the reverse die of a medal struck during the early years of Peruvian Independence. An interesting item somewhat similar in nature to the famous "Father Fischer mules" from the Mexican series of medals. Deeply toned obverse with underlying luster, small zigzag scratch before mouth. The reverse is more mildly toned allowing the high amount of luster present to show through. Both sides exhibit some deep rough die rust or thin die cracks showing the age of the original dies used when this piece was struck. Of great interest to the collector of Spanish colonial medals and will be a point of great sophistication to any collection. PCGS Genuine--Scratch, Unc Details.

Ex: Jose Medina Collection, plated on pg. 9 of his rare 1919 supplemental work, "Medallas Coloniales Hispanoamericanas: Nuevos Materiales para su estudio."

Estimate: $2000.00- $4000.00
