RUSSIA. 10 Ruble, 1766-CNB. Catherine II (The Great) (1762-96). PCGS Genuine--Damage, EF Details Secure Holder.
Fr-129a; C-79a; Bit-13(R); cf.Dia-124; Sev-277. Well traveled piece which hides an intriguing die characteristic. The obverse portrait die does not match any shown in Diakov or Bitkin for this date, however when compared to the obverse die shown for the broad bust type of 1767 the drapery and legend position match up. The reverse die however matches those shown for 1766 alluding to the concept that this piece would have been struck towards the end of the minting run for that year and the obverse die was used again in the production of 1767. It should be noted as well that the obverse die does show deterioration in the lettering and would probably have been decommissioned before the minting of 1767. As mentioned in the grade this piece has sustained surface damage over its existence beginning with a rather poor planchet being used which shows several minor lamination cracks throughout the reverse and a large flaw to right of central eagle, the obverse has fared a bit better with only a shallow dig behind bust which draws the eye. Though less than optimal an interesting piece for study. PCGS Genuine--Damage, EF Details Secure Holder.

From the Dr. Michael Popoff Collection.

Estimate: $2000.00- $3000.00
