RUSSIA. Peace with Turkey Medal Struck in Gold by C. Leberecht/F.W. Gass, 1791. Catherine II ( The Great) (1762-96). PCGS Genuine--Filed Rims, Unc Details Secure Holder.
Approximately 54 mm. Dia-225.2. Crowned and laureate bust right, legend around; Reverse: Shield with the arms of Russia and map of the Russian lands bordering the Black Sea leaning against stone pedestal, olive and palm branch interlaced above, legend above and two line inscription in exergue. Signed by the engravers on both sides. The Russo-Turkish war of 1787-92 was a failed attempt by the Ottoman Empire to regain lands lost in the previous war of 1768-74 to Russia. After the victories attained by the Russians and Austrians at Focsani(Russian), Rymnik(Russian), Belgrade (Austrian), the Fortress of Izmail in Odessa(Russian) and Machin (Russian) and the concerns of Russia that Prussia would enter the war a treaty was signed on July 31st, 1791 which would end the war and cement Russian hold over the region near the Black Sea. EXTREMELY RARE and historically significant. It appears that the noted edge filing was done prior to striking at the mint as it is extremely uniform around both sides of this medal. Minor contact marks with light wispy hairlines. Excellent strike showing even the most minute detail with light attractive tone. PCGS Genuine--Filed Rims, Unc Details Secure Holder.

Estimate: $30000.00- $40000.00
