SWEDEN. Nominating Committee For the Nobel Prize in Medicine Gold Medal, 1961. EXTREMELY FINE.
27 mm; 14.78 gms. Bust of Alfred Nobel in coat left; Reverse: Aesculapius cup and serpent, wreath behind. Edge marked, "MJV GULD 1961". Silver participation medals are awarded to nominating committee members at each conference to determine the year's nominees and winner with possibly several such meetings taking place per year and with medals given out at each. A committee member may exchange ten of these silver medals to receive a gold version like this one. This was apparently the case in 1962 when this gold medal was given out during deliberations which eventually ended in the prize being awarded to biophysicist Georg von Bekesy for his research into the function of the mammalian cochlea. A few light contact marks and some light brushes of handling wear on high points but overall a pleasing example with lovely yellow gold color. EXTREMELY FINE.
