WORLD COINS, ITALY, Renaissance. Tomaso Rangon, (1493-1577), philologist. Complimentary Cast Bronze Medal, undated, 53 mm, 42.9g, Venetian School. Bearded bust right, THOMAS PHILOLOGVS RAVENNAS. Rev. Diaphonous woman crowns a bull with a wreath, VIRTVTE PARTA DEO ET LABORE. Pierced between head and second L of PHILOLOGVS, with a good portrait. (Attwood 436; Pollard (2007) 477; Kress 417a; Pollard, Bargello III, 750; Volt 502). About very fine.

Tommaso Rangone, born Tommaso Giannotti, called Philologus, Venetian scholar and patron of the arts. He taught philosophy and medicine at Padua. As physician to Count Guido Rangone he received the right to bear his name. In 1539 he moved to Venice, where he became a highly influential figure and a patron of Tintoretto, Sansovino and Vittoria.
