Very Fine - Good Very Fine. Sand patina. Extremely Rare.
In order to ensure a smooth succession, Justin I raised his nephew Justinian to the rank of co-emperor in the final five months of his life, thus explaining the rarity of coins from this period of joint rule. Well centred and with an attractive sand patina, the present piece was struck from the same dies as the example illustrated in Sear's 'Byzantine Coins', a piece formerly of the I. T. Roper Collection that now resides in the British Museum.
