Trajan Æ Sestertius. Rome, AD 116-117. IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC PARTHICO P M TR P COS VI P P, laureate and draped bust right / REX PARTHIS DATVS, Trajan seated left on platform, presenting Parthamaspates to kneeling Parthian; attendant standing behind emperor. RIC II 667; Woytek 594v-2; Banti 96. 31.13g, 35mm, 6h.

Very Fine, flan crack 12h, attractive patina.

Towards the close of his reign and having conquered the Parthians and dethroned their king Chosroes, Trajan imposed a new sovereign upon them, a scene which is commemorated on the reverse of the present coin. We see here the personification of Parthia kneeling before the emperor, and Trajan, who is seated on a suggestum and attended by the commander of the Praetorian guards, presenting Parthamaspates whom he points to with his hand. This event is attested by legend REX PARTHIS DATVS - 'A King given to the Parthians' - and must have been in the highest degree flattering to Roman pride and ambition.
