RUSSIAN COINS AND HISTORICAL MEDALS, NICHOLAS II, 1894-1917, 2 ½ Imperials - 25 Roubles 1896*. GOLD. On the Coronation of Nicholas II. Bit 312 (R2), Ilyin (150 Rubl.), Petrov (200 Rubl.), Sev 555 (RRR), Fr.171. Extremely rare; a Classic Russian rarity with only 301 pieces struck. In a contemporary swivel gold mount set on a malachite dome (formed from the polished half of the nodule). By Vladimir Finikov, workmaster at the Bolin workshop, St. Petersburg. Maker's mark: 'B.Ф' and Zolotniki '56' mark on swivel gold base. A unique presentation piece set. Some friction hairlines in the fields, pressmarks on the left and right edges likely from years position in the swivel stand. Otherwise, Brilliant uncirculated

The entire piece was presented to either Jean Pierre Cubat (1844-1922), French-born chef to three Tsars – Alexander II, Alexander III and Nicholas II, sometime between late 1896 and 1903. In addition to his culinary court position, in 1886, Jean Pierre opened a French restaurant, Café de Paris in St. Petersburg. His brother André at some point took over running the establishment.
