French India Banque de l'Indo-Chine 50 Rupees 10.9.1898 Pick A3s Specimen. French India is one of the least known French territories, consisting of five cities on the east and west coasts of India. These were acquired over the course of nearly one hundred years between 1654 and 1750. These cities were passed back and forth between the colonial powers several times before being permanently ceded to France between 1914 and 1917. All five cities became part of the Republic of India between 1950 and 1954. Needless to say the demand for currency, which was satisfied by an office of the Banque de l'Indochine in Pondicherry, was relatively small and notes issued for use in French India are uniformly very scarce to rare. This 50 Rupees Specimen note is in wonderful condition given the passage of time since this note was printed. With a large SPECIMEN perforation, the only fault on this note is a short margin tear just to the right of the end of the DECRETS ribbon in the upper right margin. Just two notes are listed in the PMG census, this example and another 64, which we actually know to be a Net graded note. PMG grades this note Choice Uncirculated 64 a grade that it surely deserves.

Estimate: 12500-17500 USD
