1776 $1 Continental Dollar, EG FECIT, Pewter -- Tooled -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Newman 3-D, W-8460, R.4. This is the variety with the designer's EG FECIT identification on the obverse. Following decades of speculation in the early 20th century, Eric P. Newman identified Elisha Gallaudet as the engraver of the obverse die of this Continental dollar variety, and he likely prepared the other dies as well. Newman published his findings in the August 1959 issue of The Numismatist. This example is a sharply detailed representative with deep gray surfaces. A planchet crack is evident at 2 o'clock on the obverse and 4 o'clock on the reverse. While the surfaces retain little luster, we are unsure what constitutes the tooling noted on the PCGS holder. This is a pleasing example for the historic-minded American numismatist.
