1787 FUGIO Fugio Cent, STATES UNITED, 4 Cinquefoils, Pointed Rays MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. N. 13-X, W-6855, R.2. The Fugio cent was the first official copper United States issue. Because the U.S. Mint would not exist until 1793, the Fugio cents were privately struck. The issue was scandalous, since the contract called for 345 tons of copper coins, but only a much smaller amount was ever delivered. Most high grade examples, particularly those from the 'X' reverse die, originate from the Bank of New York holdings. This is an especially nice near-Gem with much more remaining Red than is normally encountered. One minor narrow vertical lamination noted through the O in ONE. Listed on page 89 of the 2017 Guide Book.
