1783 6PENCE Chalmers Sixpence, Large Date, Fine 12 PCGS. Breen-1013, W-1765, R.6. John Chalmers was a Maryland silversmith who sought to rid commerce of worn-out Spanish-American silver. All Chalmers sixpence are rare to very rare. The "unique" Breen-1017, W-1780 piece turned out to be an example of Breen-1014, W-1770, which leaves three sixpence die marriages. W-1775 is the sole Small Date variety. W-1765 is known as the "Period between Large Date" variety, to distinguish it from the "Period after Large Date" W-1770. These designations only increase confusion, since W-1765 has a small period after the date, and W-1770 shows a period nearly between the date. It is better to attribute W-1765 by the absence of a ray through the P in PENCE, since the P is prominently punctured by a ray on the other two marriages.
This is an unmarked silver-gray sixpence with a slight bulge in the field near SIX. The obverse (Chalmers side) is moderately off center toward 7 o'clock, which makes I. CHALMERS sharper than the final letters in ANNAPOLIS. Listed in the 2017 Guide Book on page 53.
