Half Cents
1806 1/2 C Small 6, Stems, C-3, B-2, FS-301, Low R.6 -- Damage -- PCGS Genuine. AG Details. This variety was not listed in the Gilbert reference, and was identified by B. Max Mehl. Walter Breen wrote:

"The discovery coin was ex Neil: 2235, originally identified by Neil as 'Gilbert 2,' and in the Neil sale as 'Not in Gilbert,' where it was purchased by Joseph Brobston. In November 1952, this designation was changed to read 'Obverse Gilbert 1, reverse Gilbert 2,' after Brobston had compared it with his uncirculated Gilbert 2, in conference with this writer."

Manley Die State 3.0, with a dramatic cud over the IC in AMERICA. Dr. Ron Manley (1998) calls this state "extremely rare, only 5 known." The cud is presumably the cause for the early discard of the reverse die, and the unusual rarity of C-3. This minimally granular medium brown example is nicely detailed for the AG level, and has a bold date. HALF CENT and UNITED STATES are also sharp. An narrow indentation at the B in LIBERTY causes a bend, and the fraction is worn smooth, as is the final A in AMERICA. OF AME is faint, but the all-important cud is distinct. Our EAC grade AG3.
Ex: Will W. Neil (B. Max Mehl, 6/1947), lot 2235; Joseph Brobston (Stack's, 1963 FPL); Philip M. Showers (Stack's, privately 1969); Willis I. duPont; Fred Werner (2/20/1977); Larry Goldberg (2/22/1977); Joe Flynn (4/26/1977); R. Tettenhorst (Davy Collection, Part II, Goldberg Coins, 9/2011), lot 332, where it realized $6,038.
