Indian Cents
1873 1C Open 3 MS66 Red PCGS. The modified 3 in the date was apparently made in January 1873 when Chief Coiner Archibald Louden Snowden complained about the similarity between the 3 punch that was used in the date and an 8. The 1873 Open 3 Indian cent is slightly more plentiful than the later Closed 3 variant. PCGS reports 87 Open 3 Red submissions and 46 Closed 3 submissions. Both are scarce to rare in the better Mint State grades with a Red designation.
Both sides of this Premium Gem emit copper-orange luster with a splash of soft violet on the Indian's hair. The design features are sharply struck including all four diamonds, the hair, LIBERTY, most of the feather tips, and the ribbing in the leaves of the oak wreath. No significant marks or unsightly spots are evident. Population: 6 in 66 Red, 0 finer (11/16).
