Lincoln Cents
1916-D 1C MS66 Red PCGS. Ex: Lone Star Collection. David Lange, in The Complete Guide to Lincoln Cents, writes that: "1916-D is fairly common in the lower circulated grades. Coins grading VF through AU are scarce, as collecting from circulation didn't become popular for another 20 years. In Mint State, choice brown or red/brown examples are scarce at the very least, while coins displaying full, original color are unquestionable rare. When found, these tend to have a pinkish hue and are usually less than fully struck."
The strike on this Premium Gem Red piece does not fit the profile alluded to above. Excellent definition is apparent on Lincoln's hair, the legends, date, mintmark, the lines of the wheat stalks, and on all of the reverse lettering. Lustrous surfaces exhibit pinkish-orange hues on the obverse, and orange with hints of pink and sky-blue on the reverse. Both sides are impeccably preserved. A tiny mark to the right of the chin and above the 9 may help to pedigree the coin. Population: 17 in 66 (4 in 66+) Red, 2 finer (11/16).
Ex: Tom Mershon Collection / FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2007), lot 809, where it sold for $34,500.
