1918-S 1C MS65 Red PCGS. A pair of Brown coins are graded MS66 at PCGS, but that service has not seen any Red and Brown or Red pieces above Gem condition. This MS65 Red example is conditionally rare and among the finest certified. The strike is slightly weak on the O in ONE, as usual, but is sharp elsewhere. Both sides display frosty copper-orange luster with occasional wisps of amber. There are no obvious carbon specks. The last MS65 Red coin that we offered was a PCGS example in our October 2014 PNG Invitational Signature sale, lot 4629, which realized more than $11,100. The present coin is better-struck than that piece and displays proportionately superior eye appeal. The reverse remains slightly fuzzy in the fields due to the usual die wear. Population: 17 in 65 (1 in 65+) Red, 0 finer (11/16).
