Proof Three Cent Silver
1858 3CS PR67 NGC. CAC. Mintage estimates for the proof 1858 three cent silver range from 60-75 pieces, per Breen (1977), to 210, per the 2017 Guide Book of United States Coins (the Red Book). The latter estimate is thought to be more accurate, based on the 212 submissions (that likely include several resubmissions) reported by NGC and PCGS combined. The PCGS website suggests that approximately 100 coins are known.
Grayish patination imbued with whispers of grayish-blue visits both sides of this Superb Gem. The design elements are boldly struck and each side is impeccably preserved. Mild field-device contrast is noted on the reverse. CAC aptly recognizes the quality of this gorgeous coin. Census: 5 in 67 (1 in 67★), 1 finer. CAC: 3 in 67, 0 finer (11/16).
