Proof Three Cent Silver
1872 3CS PR66 Cameo PCGS. CAC. The mintages of business strikes and proofs were nearly identical during the final year of striking three cent silver pieces for circulation. Just 1,000 circulation strikes were joined by 950 proofs. This contrasted Premium Gem is brilliant save for a mere hint of pale gold on the reverse. Glassy-mirrored fields contrast boldly with the frost-white raised devices. A tiny planchet void between OF and AMERICA is of little note, as are a pair of small lint marks and minor repunching on the date. The strike is sharp as expected, with only the usual flatness on the four bottom stars on the reverse. Population: 10 in 66 Cameo, 2 finer. CAC: 8 in 66, 3 finer (11/16).
