Proof Three Cent Nickels
1884 3CN PR68 PCGS. CAC. In a numismatically odd (but not unheard-of) reversal, the 1884 proof mintage exceeded its circulation strike mintage by more than 2 to 1. A year later, the 1885 three cent nickel one-upped the feat with a proof mintage that outpaced the business strikes by 3 to 1. Just two coins have achieved the PR68 level at PCGS and one other is listed at NGC, with none numerically finer at either service. This example displays a frosted, icy-blue portrait surrounded by glassy-mirrored fields imbued with pale iridescence. The intensity of color increases on the equally mirrored reverse, while both side are impeccably well-struck. This is the sole CAC-endorsed example for the grade. Population: 2 in 68, 0 finer. CAC: 1 in 68, 0 finer (11/16).
