Proof Three Cent Nickels
1889 3CN PR68 PCGS. The 1889 is popular as the last year of issue for the three cent nickel series. Many of the 1888 and 1889 issues were melted for recoinage into nickel five cent pieces when the law abolishing them was passed in 1890. The present example is a lightly patinated, Superb Gem proof that displays shimmering, partially reflective surfaces unencumbered by marks, hairlines, or annoying spots. Each side exhibits a pastel-golden and rose-red finish with hints of sky-blue as the coin is turned under a light. The 1 in the date is repunched, a trait that the Breen Encyclopedia says is found on a minority of proofs. Population: 2 in 68, 0 finer (11/16).
