Shield Nickels
1866 5C Rays, Doubled Die Obverse, FS-102, MS66 PCGS. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST is plainly doubled left, and all four date digits are repunched north. Fivaz and Stanton remark: "This variety is unusual, as it is one of very few Shield nickels that has a doubled obverse die with no doubling evident anywhere on the shield." Also of note is that this is among the finest survivors from a mintage exceeding 14.7 million coins. Glints of gold around the borders blend with brilliant, nickel-gray centers. Strongly struck with the exception of the lower olive tips. Die cracks encircle each side. Population (all varieties): 57 in 66 (4 in 66+), 0 finer (11/16).
