Shield Nickels
1880 5C XF45 PCGS. The 1880 is the no-questions key date among circulation-strike Shield nickels. Apart from two proof-only issues in the 1877 and 1878, the 1880 has a series-low mintage of 16,000 coins. PCGS estimates a survivorship of about 100 pieces across the grade spectrum. This stone-gray XF representative retains good detail despite softness on the upper shield and leaves. A couple of small flecks occur within the verticals and in the reverse fields. Population: 6 in 45, 44 finer (10/16).
