Liberty Nickels
1887 5C MS66 PCGS. The lustrous and frosty surfaces display intermittent iridescence with lavender, gold, and gray overtones on both sides of this sharply struck Premium Gem nickel. A mintage of more than 15 million pieces required 143 obverse dies, punished by the hard and unforgiving copper/nickel planchets. This piece received an exemplary strike, with sharp hair definition and more than 50% detail on the bowknot and left-hand ear of corn. Only three pieces are numerically finer at PCGS. Population: 32 in 66 (3 in 66+), 3 finer (10/16).
