Liberty Nickels
1891 5C MS66 PCGS. CAC. High mintages matter little for Liberty Head nickels in high grades, since so few were well-made enough to qualify for Premium Gem or finer Uncirculated grades. The 1891 is a case in point. Nearly 17 million pieces were struck, yet fewer than three dozen coins have achieved the MS66 level at PCGS. This satiny qualifier exudes a melding of pale-orange and steel-blue toning amid swirling mint luster. A few of the top stars are round at their centers, and the infamous ear of corn shows not a kernel of detail, but the eye appeal and surface quality are fantastic. Population: 35 in 66 (5 in 66+), 2 finer. CAC: 10 in 66, 1 finer (10/16).
