Liberty Nickels
1912-D 5C MS65+ PCGS. CAC. The 1912-S gets all the attention, but the 1912-D is also scarce in high grades despite a dramatically higher mintage. The Denver Mint struggled in its first efforts to mint nickels, a victim of the steel-hard alloy and widely spaced dies. This example is remarkably well-struck -- indeed, fully struck -- with sharp star centers, hair definition, and even a fully detailed ear of corn. Golden mint luster lurks beneath deep-lilac toning. Population: 12 in 65+, 46 finer. CAC: 32 in 65, 11 finer (10/16).
