Buffalo Nickels
1916 5C Doubled Die Obverse, FS-101, Fine 15 PCGS. The 1916 "Double Date" variety was not discovered until circa-1964. As a result, most survivors are well worn. In fact, the variety is rarer in all grades than the 1918/7-S, and is the key to the Buffalo nickel series. This example has a clear date, and shows the tell-tale curves from the initial hubbing near the 9 and 6. The feather tips are also doubled. The streaky cream-gray surfaces are free from consequential contact.
