1939 5C Reverse of 1940, FS-901, PR68 NGC. In 1939 the steps of Monticello were strengthened and straightened. The difference is immediately obvious when a coin such as this one is compared to the Reverse of 1938 with its so-called "wavy steps." The majority of 1939 proof nickels still used the previous year's reverse. This is an exceptional proof with no obvious defects and brilliant surfaces throughout. The fields are deeply mirrored and light mint frost can be seen over the devices. Census: 1 in 68, 0 finer (11/16).
