Early Half Dimes
1797 H10C 15 Stars, V-2, LM-1, R.3, AU53 PCGS. The 15-Star obverse is the sole identification needed for the LM-1 die pair, since it is the only variety with that star count. The other 1797 half dime varieties show either a 16 Star or a 13 Star obverse. The Mint soon realized adding a star for each new statehood was not workable, and eventually the star count reverted to 13 stars to symbolize the 13 original colonies. A scattering of small marks on this attractive About Uncirculated example accompanies strong die clashing. The pleasing, silver-gray surfaces deepen to deep slate-gray at the margins. Population: 7 in 53, 43 finer (12/16).
