Seated Dimes
1874-CC 10C Arrows, F-101, R.4 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Carson City mintages were consistently lower than their Philadelphia, New Orleans, and San Francisco counterparts, accounting for the facility's popularity among collectors today. Breen's Encyclopedia explains: "Official orders deliberately limited the Carson Mint's output for political reasons, and this limitation in turn was intended to provide an official excuse for abolition!" Treasury Secretary George S. Boutwell's belief that coining operations should occur "chiefly at one mint upon the Pacific, and at one mint upon the Atlantic coast" given the advancements in railroad and communication networks further explains the smaller CC mintages. Production of dimes was limited to just 10,817 pieces in 1874, the second-lowest CC dime mintage, and the issue is the major key date in the series after the unique 1873-CC No Arrows dime. This is one of the finest examples known of this rarity from the standpoint of details. The surfaces were cleaned long ago and retain some underlying brightness, but each side has taken on patina once again. The center of the obverse is cream-gray with a deep russet and blue tinted margin, while the reverse is evenly toned the same russet-blue. Remarkably well-defined for this key issue.
