Proof Seated Dimes
1859 10C F-102, R.5, PR65 PCGS. CAC. The number of proof dimes struck in 1859 amounted to 800 pieces. Many were melted as unsold or spent. Enough survive to the present day, however, to meet collector demand, especially through near-Gem. This is significant because the relatively low mintage of the circulation strikes, 429,000 pieces, makes locating higher-graded Mint State examples difficult. Bluish-green patination dominates the obverse of this Gem proof, accented with splashes of russet. A melange of golden-tan, purple, russet, and bluish-green cascades over the reverse. The design elements are sharply struck throughout. The pleasing eye appeal is appropriately recognized by CAC. Population: 29 in 65, 16 finer. CAC: 10 in 65, 6 finer (11/16).
