Early Quarters
1804 25C B-1, R.3, VF20 PCGS. Tompkins Die State 3/3, with clash marks near Liberty's bust and chin, and the eagle's wings. Die cracks travel from the rim to the 0 in the date and across the tops of AMERICA. A die scratch near star 9 confirms the B-1 attribution. The central motifs are surprisingly bold despite an expected degree of wear from years spent in circulation. Silver-gray patina covers each side. This is a splendid, problem-free example with a small mark on the cheek. The 1804 owes much of its fame to the dollars bearing that date, but it is a rarity in its own right with a small mintage of merely 6,738 coins.
