Bust Quarters
1815 25C "E" Counterstamp, B-1, R.1, MS61 NGC. Tompkins Die State 2/2. Like many of the "E" counterstamped pieces, this one is in Mint State with faint blue accents over the lustrous, reddish-gold toning. Karl Moulton made the interesting observation that the "E" above Liberty's cap roughly corresponds to the position of E in LIBERTY seen on quarters dated 1796 to 1807. Likewise, the position of the "L" on L-stamped quarters approximates the position of L in LIBERTY on early-date quarters, in the open field just past star 7. This is a sharp and attractive example of the frequently seen "E" on an 1815 quarter. The position of the counterstamp is significant as one indication that the marks may have been applied at the Philadelphia Mint.
