Bust Quarters
1825/4/(2) 25C B-2, R.2, MS64 NGC. Alternatively called an 1825/4 or 1825/3 overdate, the likelihood that the true underdigits are a 4 and a 2 is strong, making the correct overdate an 1825/4/2. The present richly toned example is struck from an early state of the dies, with much prooflikeness in the fields beneath the deep toning. Viewed at the proper angle, shades of cobalt blue, lavender, and rose-gold suggest longtime album storage. The strike is a bit soft on some high points but all of the stars are sharp. This attractive, original near-Gem quarter approaches the Condition Census for the variety and is sure to please the most perceptive bidder. Census: 8 in 64, 4 finer (11/16).
