Bust Quarters
1831 25C Small Letters, B-1, R.3, MS62 Prooflike NGC. Tompkins Die State 1/3. The small, curl-base 2 in the denomination is diagnostic of the B-1 die marriage. Faint ivory-gold hues gather at the borders, although this prooflike quarter is for the most part brilliant and untoned. The portrait of Liberty and the eagle are frost-white with moderate contrast against the reflective fields, which are deeply mirrored on the reverse although less so on the obverse. Browning-1 is available up to the About Uncirculated grade, but challenging any finer. This razor-sharp Uncirculated example is struck from an early state of the obverse die, without die rust that indicates a later stage. A few delicate lines and small abrasions account for the assigned grade. Census: 3 in 62 Prooflike, 5 finer (11/16).
